Articles about Animals and Pets – Cougar the Cat

Dear Stephanie,

My cat's name is Cougar. She is a smart, adorable loving cat. For the last two years she has been sneezing and coughing 40–50 times about 5–6 times a day. I took her to the Vet and he put her on antibiotics which she was allergic to and he had no other solution for this problem. She also scratches my furniture – wood and cloth about twice a month. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Cori,

Coughing and sneezing can be symptomatic of an animal being allergic to a myriad of things in their environment or by any sharp smells, cold temperatures, round worms, eye or respiratory infection or heart problems. The most common allergens would be food, air fresheners, cigarette smoke, fabric softeners, household cleaners, perfumes, deodorized cat litter, etc.

In Cougar's case it would be important to note when she is coughing, for example: when she wakes up, after she eats or at a specific time of day. This could help you discover the exact cause of her symptoms. Cougar did show me images of scratching your furniture and sniffing around her litter box so perhaps she is trying to communicate something about what is being used in her litter or on the fabric, such as an air freshener or furniture polish.

Her scratching is a way of relieving tension and boredom. She may be wanting you to play with her more. It would be advisable to give her only positive images of what you want her to scratch rather than reprimanding her for scratching the furniture. Negative concepts such as “Don't scratch the chair!” are not understood by animals. “Scratch the post, please!” gives them the clue of what you want them to do.

Eliminating the allergens and giving her eye drops or nose drops could alleviate her symptoms. A book called “The New Natural Cat” by Anitra Frazier has excellent advice and remedies for such symptoms. Also do not be afraid to seek out a second opinion, symptoms like these can mask other ailments.

Blessings to you both, Stephanie.
